Wizard
AoE Ranged CasterFire Wall kiting plus wide-radius spells like Meteor Storm let a Wizard clear whole mob packs at once, making it the fastest raw leveling class in the game across nearly every community list.
Hunter
Ranged DPS / Safe FarmerDamages from range with traps and Falcon assist, so it rarely takes a hit while grinding; slightly slower than Wizard but the safest solo farming class and strong at sniping MVPs.
Priest
Support / Solo SustainNot a damage leader, but Heal, Safety Wall, and buffs make it nearly unkillable while soloing, and it's the backbone of any party's dungeon clear speed and MVP-attempt safety.
Blacksmith
Melee DPS / Zeny FarmerCart Termination hits hard against single targets and Discount/Overcharge turn farming runs into a zeny income stream, which several guides weight as highly as raw kill speed.
Assassin
Burst Melee DPSSonic Blow and dual-katar double-attack builds give some of the highest single-target burst of any second job, at the cost of being squishier than Blacksmith or Knight.
Knight
Melee Tank / AoE BashBowling Bash gives decent crowd damage and Peco Peco mounting adds mobility, but SP-hungry skills and gear dependency keep it a step behind the top melee picks for pure leveling speed.
Sage
Support Caster / Elemental UtilityElemental endow support and Land Protector utility are valuable in groups, but Sage lacks a strong solo leveling identity until later job tiers, so most guides rate it mid-pack.
Monk
Melee Combo DPSChain-combo melee damage scales well once geared, but the build is gear- and stat-allocation sensitive, and community sources note it underperforms until a player commits to a specific combo build.
Crusader
Melee Tank / Support-HybridHigh survivability and Holy Cross damage make it a reliable, low-risk leveler, but its clear speed lags behind the AoE casters and burst melee classes above it.
Rogue
Utility Melee / StripperSteal and Strip skills are valuable for item and zeny farming and for shutting down PvM threats, but raw solo clear speed sits below Assassin and most guides treat Rogue as a support-farmer pick rather than a primary leveler.
Alchemist
Utility DPS / Item CrafterAcid Demonstration can spike hard against high-VIT targets and potion crafting adds an economic angle, but the setup cost and playstyle complexity mean sources diverge — some niche guides rate Alchemist much higher once a player is fully invested in the build.
Bard / Dancer
Party Support (Duet-Dependent)Song and Dance buffs are strong in a full party and this pairing is near-mandatory in some end-game comps, but solo leveling and PvM viability are weak without a partner class, so it ranks lowest for general-purpose play.
Ragnarok Online has run on essentially the same second-job class skeleton for over two decades, and that stability is exactly what makes a general-effectiveness tier list possible: the consensus below isn't chasing a single balance patch, it's the accumulated result of years of leveling guides, wiki damage-per-second breakdowns, and repeated community agreement on which second jobs clear maps fastest and safest.
How this list was built
This ranking covers general PvM and leveling effectiveness — how quickly and safely a class can grind experience solo on typical hunting maps — not PvP viability, WoE performance, or end-game MVP raiding, which would each produce a different order. Rankings were compiled from the iRO Wiki's class and skill pages, official patch and balance notes, and cross-referenced leveling guides and discussion threads from Reddit's r/RagnarokOnline and the iRO Discord community. Where a class shows a wide spread of opinion — Alchemist is the clearest example, since its performance depends heavily on build investment — that divergence is called out directly in the entry's note rather than forced into a single tier.
Reading the tiers
S tier classes lead in raw clear speed with minimal risk. A tier classes are excellent but trade off either speed for safety (Priest, Hunter) or raw versatility for burst (Assassin, Blacksmith). B tier classes are solid, reliable levelers that simply don't match the top of the list without heavier gear or build investment. C tier classes bring real utility — farming, crowd control, item denial — that keeps them relevant, even though pure kill-speed is lower. D tier reflects classes that are genuinely strong in the right context (a full party) but weak for the general solo-leveling use case this list is built around.
None of these rankings assume access to top-end gear, card sets, or full stat/skill optimization — they reflect how each class performs with a reasonably built, typical leveling setup, which is the baseline most guides and community discussions use for comparison. Players optimizing for a specific server rate (Classic, Renewal, low-rate, high-rate) should treat this as a starting framework rather than a fixed ruling, since server-specific rates and available content can shift relative leveling speed.
Because UnlockXP compiles rankings like this from official data and community consensus rather than in-house personal testing, we'll revisit and update this list if a future balance patch or a clear shift in community sentiment changes where a class lands.
